Did the contestants always YELL the letters out?

Just watched Wheel of Fortune for the the first time in oh ... 22 years. After so long at the helm, Pat Sajak can and does anticipate where the wheel is going to land right off the spinner's hand. Vanna White is an inspiration for aging flight attendants the world over. The puzzles weren't as hard as I remembered them.
